I have heard the ending was disappointing though. Other notable 2016-released games I've enjoyed this year.ĭeus Ex: Mankind Divided - Yet to complete this one, but I've enjoyed what I've played so far. While I've been craving for a return of multiplayer FPS that focus on individual skill like Quake, Overwatch has done an excellent job on keeping me interested in team-based FPS. All of the heroes are available to use for everyone, as well as future updates such as maps and new heroes being given for free, and a complete emphasis on being easy to learn, hard to master. The game has a solid foundation to be a very competitive FPS, with unique heroes that caters to all kinds of players, a design that encourages team-play with hero synergies, and everyone, and I mean EVERYONE has an equal footing it comes to accessibility. Overwatch on the other hand shows that you don't need a lot of the crap that comes from the modern format to have an amazing multiplayer game. One of the reasons why I was disappointed with DOOM's multiplayer was that it tried to "get with the times" with lobbies, fully customized loadouts, and game-changing progression such as unlocks from leveling up. Glad to see there's a renewed interest of player-centric single player FPS.Įasily my favorite multiplayer game of 2016, and one I'll continue playing for quite a while. Definitely my favorite single-player FPS since Wolfenstein: The New Order. It also helps that it does platforming in FPS extremely well, with mantling being smooth and natural and double jumps making it easy to traverse through the environment. The shooting is extremely fluid, a good use of enemy variety, the combat is skill-based and the level design is amazing with a lot of its secrets, openness, good use of exploration. The game is gameplay first while story takes a backseat, as it should since its DOOM after all. Its a bad-ass shooter with a bad-ass return of a bad-ass protagonist in a bad-ass setting with some bad-ass music, and it does almost everything right in a shooter. While the multiplayer was an absolute disappointment, the single-player campaign was a very pleasant surprise and the meat of the game. Not gonna lie, this was one of my most anticipated games of 2016, and I dropped almost all of my anticipation after playing the multiplayer closed beta.
